Lynn West worked for Greenville County from 1975 until 2005, primarily for the Public Defender’s Office. West’s primary job was to interview and assess defendants to determine their need for a public defender. In 1975, West interviewed Charles Wakefield, Jr. as part of his jail intake processing. West remembered that on that same night, he heard from one of South Carolina’s most notorious criminals that Wakefield wasn’t responsible for the Looper murders. Later, West would encounter a man named Wyatt Earp Harper, and that meeting would haunt West for another four decades.
